Laurentian Smart Centre

Located on the corner of Chandler Drive and Ottawa Street South, is the Laurentian Smart Centre. This shopping plaza is home to a Lowe’s, Zehrs and Staples. Having these 3 stores so close to home means any chore, renovation or shopping list can be accomplished within a 5-minute drive from home! 

Alpine Centre

Across from the Smart Centre is the Alpine Centre. Here we have recreational activities for different tastes. Boston Pizza offers a comfortable family-friendly atmosphere with fast and leisurely dining to make those Friday nights fun for everyone with no clean up required. Cora’s Breakfast diner is an excellent location if you are looking for an early morning meet up with neighbours.

Plato’s Closet is known among Waterloo’s thrifting community as it specializes in streetwear fashion; The target audience is young adults and students looking to keep up with today’s latest fashion trends while seeking to reduce their spending and environmental impact. The Perfect Find is another thrifting paradise; this is a great thrift shop that donates some of its proceeds to missionary trips; Great finds at great prices for a great cause!

South of Alpine is the Kitchener Public Library Country Hills Branch that offers books, computer access and youth programs that Alpine residents can use. What’s great about this location is it’s one of the newer KPL branches, so services here are up to date with the latest features. 

Restaurants & Food Services 

Fireside Deli, Boston Pizza and Montana’s BBQ are easygoing food options when you’re looking to eat out! Located in the Laurentian Smart Centre Plaza, these chains offer comfort food with a family-friendly atmosphere. 

If you’re looking for a night out and some drinks, Alpine plaza is home to Chicago Pub & Billiards. This venue holds live events, offers excellent bar food and drinks with a friendly sports bar atmosphere complete with darts and billiard tables. This will soon be your new watering hole in no time! 

Debrodniks Donuts is a Kitchener staple; reasonably new in town, Debrodniks has quickly become famous for its creative and delicious homemade donuts. HealthCare 

The Athlete Factory @ Lot42 is Kitchener’s premier multi-sport indoor training facility offering 8,000 sq.ft of indoor turf ideal for soccer and football training. The location also features Gym41, a private and fully equipped gym along with a parent’s lounge for those who wish to relax as their star athletes train. 

Activa Sportsplex is a multi-purpose athletic facility South of Alpine that is home to the Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy and the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association. This facility includes two indoor ice rinks KMHA Alumni Arena & Patrick J. Doherty Arenas; the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation Walking Track walkers, joggers and runners a safe place to lace up and get some exercise all year-round; and the Regional Boxing Academy, a non-profit organization sanctioned through Boxing Ontario and the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. 

Schooling / Child Care

Students in Alpine Village have a choice between the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Elementary School and Alpine Public School to attend school within their neighbourhood. Both schools have JK to Grade 8, making this neighbourhood perfect for those looking to start a family or settle for an extended period. The location of schools in this area is relatively close, great for families who are looking to move to a place where schooling is close to home. Secondary students are fortunate to have St. Mary’s High School and Eastwood Collegiate Institute to choose from; both schools are well known for their specialty programs. St.Mary’s has a robust ESL program that is known throughout the region for its effective methods in helping new Canadian students catch up and grasp English classes. EastWood is known for its impressive art-focused curriculum that enables students to excel in their chosen field they wish to pursue.

Within Alpine, there are no bus routes that travel through the neighbourhood, keeping the noise level low. As Alpine is in the heart of Kitchener’s Southern side, there are still plenty of transit options within a short walking distance. The bus lines 205 and 201 are GRT Express busses that travel along Ottawa and Block Line Road, respectively. The 205 connects with the LRT station at Borden Station. Below is a list of the routes that run along Alpine’s North and South sides connecting the city from the newly developed Williamsburg community to the Boardwalk on Waterloo’s east side.

Parks

There are many parks, trails and greenspaces located close to Alpine Village to spend your days enjoying. Alpine Park is at the heart of the neighbourhood it features a wide-open field, one baseball diamond and a small forest that residents can enjoy. The park also allows residents to connect to the Laurentian trail which connects many green spaces in Kitchener together, ending off in Williamsburg’s Borden Wetlands

Most notable is McLennan Park with its dirt bike courses, enclosed dog park, a waterpark, volleyball courts and hiking trails. You’ll find yourself always finding new ways to relax here. Trails from McLennan park go through the hydropower corridor connecting the smaller parks along the way.

Directly beside the park is McLennan Dog Park, a fenced-off portion of the park for your furry family member to use and get rid of that extra energy. Rules only ask owners to keep dogs leashed until within the specified area and to clean up after their pet. 

Meinzinger Park is located North of Alpine; it offers 5 soccer fields and a hiking trail that connects to Lakeside Park. Meinzinger park is a spacious park with fields that allow you to play sports and enjoy your time outside. 

Lakeside Park features many natural habitats, including wetlands, open water, forest and meadow, as well as amenities for active living, such as a playground, toboggan hill and an outdoor skating rink. Shoemaker Pond is surrounded by forest and a natural meadow; The Park provides a rest stop for many migratory and breeding birds, so if you enjoy watching animals in their habitats, Lakeside Park is perfect.
