Location

Woolwich Township is very large, encompassing the entire area to the North-East of Kitchener-Waterloo. It boasts some of the biggest attractions of Waterloo Region including the St. Jacob’s Market and Village, Elmira and its annual Maple Syrup Festival, and the Region of Waterloo Airport in Breslau.

Conestogo, Bloomingdale, Mary Hill, Breslau, Winterbourne, and West Mountrose are all high-demand residential communities because they have rural charm, but with access to big city amenities.

Amenities

It’s normal to see horse-drawn buggies with the large population of Old Order Mennonite families in the Township of Woolwich. However, you will be surprised by the many amenities if offers:

Schooling / Child Care

The first six listed are operated by the Waterloo Region District School Board, and the remaining two are operated by the Waterloo Catholic District School Board.

The Elmira District Secondary School is one of the highly-rated secondary schools by the Fraser Insititute.

The Waterloo Region is also home to multiple post-secondary options like:

  • University of Waterloo
  • University of Laurier
  • Conestoga College

The University of Waterloo and The University of Laurier, both with recognitions in engineering and business programs, respectfully. While Conestoga College is best known for its polytechnic education.

For families with young ones, there are many childcare and family-oriented learning options to choose from, including multiple licensed childcare centres supported through the Region of Waterloo as well as an EarlyON Child and Family Centre in the heart of Elmira.

Transit

The GRT is Waterloo Region’s public transport operator. It operates daily bus services for the region.

Woolwich focuses this system primarily on Route 21, making the downtown highlights of both St Jacobs and Elmira easily accessible for everyone. The GRT website has information on schedules, fares and other important details for riders.

Outside of the GRT, there are many cycling and walking trails, especially surrounding the Grand River, making it an efficient way to travel around the township as well.
